208th: Making A Choice

At last, the time has come for the universities around the country to have posted those who have qualified to be the newest members of their student body. Some have it great - they have set their sights on only one university, but others may not be so lucky. True, you did pass all the entrance tests that you took, but the real challenge for some might be choosing the school. Although it might have been preferable to ask the elderly or even the internet for advice, I've taken the initiative to ask a few freshmen on how their first year of college in their respective schools went, so that maybe some of their answers could help you choose the right one, and at the same time give you a little teaser on how life would be like on campus. :)

  • Why did you choose UP?
"If you get in UP (Diliman or Manila), you are undoubtedly part of the intellectually elite of your batch in the Philippines. Knowing that I passed gives me great pride and this is one of the many reasons as to why i chose UP Diliman. This reason alone should convince you to chose UP."
- Anton Cruz, University of the Philippines Diliman, Applied Physics

"Well, I guess the biggest factor was the prestige? It's the country's premier university, so being lucky enough to get in, I wanted to take it. There was also a matter of how students from Pisay are expected to enroll in UP and I wanted to go to a college environment that would make me feel comfortable. I also got the oblation scholarship, which I wanted to use.But I guess it came down to me feeling that UP has the best teachers and lessons for where I want to be four years from now and that I thought it would be the best fit for me as a college. "
-Flora Palabrica, University of The Philippines Diliman, BS- Business Economics

  • What is the best thing about studying in UP?

"We're given the freedom of speech and the freedom to be who we are (dressing and the like) and basically, freedom to do anything, but with the notion of responsibility as a UP student. THE FACT THAT WE DON'T HAVE AS MANY UNITS AS OTHER SCHOOLS; we're only given what we need."
- Erika Acampado, University of The Philippines Manila, BS - Political Science

"For me, it has to be the diversity of people. You'll meet conyo people, people who work while studying to make a living, student activists, people who don't give a damn... marami talaga. You'll definitely encounter people with different perspectives, and when you do, you get to reevaluate your opinions and grow as a person."
- Camille Ortiz, University of The Philippines Diliman, B - Secondary Education, Major in English

  • What do you love most about UP?
"It's diverse and you can be yourself."
- Carina Bailon, University of The Philippines Diliman, BS -Clothing Technology

"The people! Hindi mahirap maging magpakatotoo dito kasi iba iba 'yung mga tao na nakakasalamuha ko, makakahanap ka talaga ng group kung saan ka talaga mag f-fit in. Pero the best parin 'yung challenge. Mahirap acads, sobra. Kaya everyday, I strive to be better para hindi masayang pagpapaaral sa'kin ng bayan!"
- Tatjana Medina, University of the Philippines Diliman, BS - Industrial Engineering

  • Why did you choose Ateneo?

"I always wanted to study in Ateneo. I like the school's environment and curriculum. Aside from that, Ateneo also has one of the 2 best Psychology departments in the Philippines."
- Bea Osorio, BS -Psychology

"Ateneo constantly gives me assurance that I chose the right school (for me). I'm surrounded by students who are just so motivated to excel, in return, challenges me to become my best. Everywhere I look around campus is beautiful - no pollution, beautiful trees and such a peaceful place to be in that is so conducive to learning. My professors? Geniuses. You'll not only learn about the subjects but insights that not one can just realize - like an everyday TED talk. & the one I love and miss in Zobel that Ateneo compromised.. the orgs (that's like no other!!!!!). An added bonus would be the connections you'll soon benefit from the future with all the org work you'll be doing. My school taught me to be humble in a way that I don't need to spend on anything fancy to learn and excel. Ateneo is a school like no other, which I'm sure everyone would say about their respective universities. So let your faith and gut lead you to which path to take - but let me guarantee you that if you do end up in this school, you'll never ever ever regret it."
- Erika Modina, BS- Health Sciences

  • What is the best thing about studying in Ateneo?

"The environment! It's such a decent community and you rarely see crimes of stealing and dishonesty."
- Joshua Litam, BS- Management Engineering

"The best thing about studying in Ateneo is the unlimited possibilities where the lessons and subjects may take you."
-Raizza Bello, 1-AB Communication

"Well, for one, in freshman year, everyone takes the same core subjects, so shifting courses would be much easier if you're not sure of the path you wanna take. They say Ateneo has the best organization life there is, and based on my experience, I think that statement's proving to be true."
-Jessica Orense, BS- Management Engineering

  • What do you love most about Ateneo?
"Studying in Ateneo has given me so much opportunities even as a freshie. I got to do projects narin with DLSU. It was a whole new world of changes and opportunities to do things I never did before. Ang daming pwedeng gawin, you find what you love the most. Ateneo gives that to you."
- Maebel Joaquin, BS -Psychology

"It’s the winning tradition – the spirit of Magis or “doing more” that’s felt everywhere. The profs. The sport teams. The people around you. The orgs. The academic work. In Ateneo, these things will let you discover who you really are, and enhance it to be a person that can truly be a person-for-others. ONE BIG FIGHT! GO ATENEO!"
-Robbin Dagle, 1-AB Communication

  • Why did you choose DLSU?

"You really can't justify why you go to DLSU...you just jump in."
- Nicollo MondoƱedo, Applied Economics - AE - BS - Accounting

" All i know is that my heart led me to DLSU. I have been a Lasallian since prep, and I have seen how the Lasallian system/curriculum molds children into holistic individuals. I believe that it doesn't matter what university you go to for college. What matters is that you strive to become the best person that you can be. I still recommend you go to DLSU! Your family is here."
- Lana Del Carmen, AB- Psychology

  • What is the best thing about studying in DLSU?
"Teachers can become unexpectedly your closest (and greenest) friends, your blockmates become the sisters (or brothers, I respect your decision) that you never knew, food is one kembot and tumbling away from your building, orgs and activities galore, you get to meet the most bakla people ever and DLSU is just the school I choose."
- Isay Yason, AB- Political Science

"The best thing about it is, DLSU opens a lot of opportunities for me to excel in my chosen field, so that in the future, I would have a lot of career options which I will be credible and qualified for."
- Kiara Lin, BS- Advertising Management

  • What do you love most about DLSU?
"DLSU is the center of excellence in business and technology. Where else should I go? The best thing about studying here is the food! Do you have a long break? Get some Flaming Wings! I am assured of a good set of skills that I need to succeed so I just love to study."
- Alen Mercader, BS- Information Systems

"I love studying DLSU because I have something to look forward to everyday. In DLSU, I don't only study, but I also have fun. Even though it's difficult surviving an engineering course like mine, I still think it's not a mistake in choosing DLSU because any Lasallian is ready to help when things get rough."
- Anne Bracamante, BS- Chemical Engineering

  • Why did you choose UST?
"First of all, I chose UST because it offers an Architecture course. Second, because it's known to be one of the best universities for Architecture. Third, because the campus is nice. I love our campus!"
-Luis Zulueta, BS- Architecture

"The first time I entered UST was the day I took my entrance exam. Pagpasok ko pa lang... BOOM sabi ko, this will be my school. I chose UST because it felt like home. Ngayon, masasabi ko na totoo 'yon kasi parang nasa high school lang pero yung difference syempre mas mahirap yung subjects, mas maraming requirements but the key here is the people in UST. I can say na hindi ko alam yung gagawin ko kung wala yung blockmates ko. Kahit na galing Luzon, Visayas at Mindanao, they make each step bearable. #itsmorefuninUST"
-Chuchay Alcantara, BS- Medical Technology

  • What is the best thing about studying in UST?
"The best thing about UST is that you know you're in safe hands! The school is 401 years old and these professors have been teaching for years as well. They know the reputation of UST and they know its standards"
 - Liz Lecaroz, BS- Architecture

"The best thing about studying in my school is the change of culture (in a positive way). High school gives us the sheltered living, while college (especially UST) gives us the opportunity to see things in a different way, given the different environment. It also teaches us how to become more independent, and get out of our comfort zones. I also like how I got to meet a lot of new people and immerse myself in a very diverse crowd.
-Lexie Rebosa, BS- Psychology

  • What do you love most about UST?
"I love UST's campus!  You can relax and escape from the stress of school without leaving the campus! There are so many places to go to such as Lover's Lane, TYK and the Library."
-Pam Soriano, BS- Information Technology

"What I love most about ust is the social environment. UST surely gives you the feeling of home and it's like you're welcome to go in and out even though you're not from there."
-Ralph Villanueva, BS- Architecture

  • Why did you choose CSB?
"I chose my school because (1) I knew that this school has a very good curriculum for my course. I knew that they designed the flowchart after the way they do it in NY or anywhere abroad. Basically, I did my research and compared what my school could offer/teach me as opposed to what the other schools couldn't. And (2) cause I got a scholarship."
- Kara Mayuga, BS - Architecture

  • What is the best thing about studying in CSB?
"The best thing about studying in CSB is that sometimes, it's chill. I like it!"
- Kiana Miranda, BS - Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management

" The facilities and the gear that we're allowed you use. As far as I know, we get some of the latest in Archi tech. Thats probably the best thing about it."
- David Garcia, BS- Architecture

  • What do you love most about CSB?
"I love studying in Benilde because 1.) I am enrolled in the course that I want for myself, 2.) I am a scholar, 3.) most, if not all, the teachers are very considerate and 4.) I have so many friends close by at DLSU. It's also worth noting that since I am previously from a La Salle school, CSB also retains a sense of familiarity for me. And did I mention there are so many great places to eat at around here?"
- Stephen Cruz, BS-IT with Specialization in Game Design and Development

  • Why did you choose UE?
"I chose the University of the East because my parents and I really believe in their DMD program. They produce top-notchers and that's what I want to be."
- Louie Fernandez, Pre- Dentistry

  • What is the best thing about studying in UE?
"It teaches me to see the real world. It makes me realize that there are different types of people whether you're well off or just right it doesn't really matter. Every one is just simple and true to everyone."
- Mia Martinez, Pre- Dentistry

  • What do you love most about UE?
"I love studying in my school because you get to be exposed to so many classes of life. Dentistry is not easy but with your fellow course-mates, going through 6 years will be a breeze!"
- Maica Gatmaitan, Pre- Dentistry

  • What's the best thing about studying in (your school)?

"The best thing about studying in my school is that I'm exposed to people from different cultures and nationalities. I get to learn and respect their cultures regardless of what it is."
- Anton Manzano, Saint Louis University, Madrid Campus, Spain

  • What's different in studying abroad?
"SNOW! And I have become much more self-sufficient than what I'm used to. I was always given the silver platter back home. Here, I have to do things by myself. I have to learn how to cook, book tickets, travel alone, send mail, work, do my laundry, and get an apartment. I have to start fresh because I barely know a soul in the US. My friends and family are thousands of miles away, and I can't rely on them forever. I was scared of stepping outside my comfort zone, but I believe that some things should be learned on our own, and I think this is the time for me. It is, indubitably, one of my best decisions ever."
- Patsy Orteza, The Pennsylvania State University, U.S.A.

  • What do you love about studying abroad?

"I love studying abroad because it allows me to have new chances in life, it gives me opportunities that I wouldn't have had if I stayed in the Philippines. I also love it because I get to meet new people and experience new things."
- Martin Valdes, Douglas University, Canada

Goodluck to all the incoming Freshmen in all of the universities and the incoming seniors who are to take their entrance examinations this year!!

207th: Cake Fight

For our Architectural Design Class, we had our Highschool Day and Christmas Party. Sir Mercado tasked us to bring our High School uniforms. I was so excited to wear my (sister's) Zobel uniform again! I also brought my ID, para mas feel. Haha! We had a lot of food! We had J.Co Donuts (sosyal), 36" Calda Pizza, chicken nuggets and bananas. We even had a chocolate fountain, but we weren't able to get it to work. Instead, we used it for our cake fight.
Naaliw ako sa mga ibang uniforms ng mga iba kong blockmates. Some uniforms looked really unique and  interesting. Mine just looked pretty normal. Haha.

We also had our Exchange Gift that day! Our budget was Php 500.00, and we had our wishlists, but most of my blockmates were so generous that they gave their complete wishlist, or exceeded beyond the budget. Before we reveal who our "baby" is, we have to imitate or describe them, to make the class guess.
Ma'am Lorenzo (our other professor for Design), got Sir Mercado! I thought it was really cute. Hehe. What are the odds, diba? On the other hand, Sir Mercado got MJ. He gave her an Arki book! Lucky! Arki books are fairly expensive, so what an amazing gift to receive.
Alissa got me and she got me "Bipolar" by Up Dharma Down, a Christmas card, and a lot of chocolates! Yay! Super happy with my gift!
I got Nicole, and I got her a "This Is War" Deluxe CD & a Php 100.00 Gift Certificate to Krispy Kreme.

We had our cake fight and water balloon fight right after, in the field.

Yeah, okay alam kong tumaba ako dahil sa pagkain. :'(

Merry Christmas, 1AR-5! :)

206th: Winter Wonderland

Yesterday night, I attended Chuchay's Winter Wonderland Debut in The Bellevue Hotel in Alabang. Since it was a Winter Wonderland theme, the guests were told to wear "cool" colors, such as blue and purple. The event started at roughly 8 P.M., and it started with the usual prayer then the grand entrance of the family and debutante. Afterwards, it was time for the 18 roses, and I found it cute that some of the guys Chuchay danced with chose really upbeat songs. It was cute!
Actually, Conrado and I was supposed to perform "Oo" by Up Dharma Down, but since we're both Arki, we couldn't really find the time to rehearse. Oh well, towel! So some other friend of Chuchay sang her favourite songs, while Chuchay changed into her second outfit. *Wardrobe change*
I was part of her 18 Treasures, and I gave her a white bracelet. Palamuting puti at pampaputi. Hahaha! Thanks, Jared for helping me para sa speech ko. Hehe.
The "Call Me Maybe" video that we did last sembreak was showed to all the guests and I was so embarrassed! Hahaha! Ang dami kong ginawa na kalokohan! Next time, magpapaka-Maria Clara na ako. It was fun to watch, though!
I take debuts like this a time to catch up with friends and schoolmates from highschool. I rarely ever see them because of everyone's busy schedules, so I make every moment on that night worth it.

Chuchay gave us cupcakes as a souvenir. I was grateful that it was chocolate instead of the usual red velvet.
I've missed this bunch!

I think this is the last debut to attend this year. Whew! I'm looking forward for more! (Kung meron pa. Hehe.)
